One of the most innovative boroughs based in West London is seeking a Junoir Litigation Solicitor to support the wider team in the council and legal team for an initial 4 months, to begin with a view to a longer-term extension

Role Purpose

To contribute to the efficient and cost-effective delivery of legal services within a culture of customer focus, continuous improvement, service excellence and employee development.
In particular to provide professional/technical advice and guidance in civil and criminal litigation to colleagues, managers and partner agencies to contribute to delivery of the council’s objectives and priorities.
Lead by example in modelling and embedding the council’s values and behaviours, working collaboratively with colleagues, partners and other stakeholders to help build a sustainable highly effective organisation and develop our reputation as a successful council delivering great value for its residents

Role Consists of the below: 

Conduct proceeding in the County Court, High Court, Crown Court and Magistrate Court or any other Tribunal and comply with applicable time limits.   The post holder’s case load may include high profile, politically sensitive and financially weighted cases. 
Appear as the Council’s advocate in Courts, Tribunals, Inquiries or other hearings as appropriate.
Draft, prepare and collate pleadings, witness statements, summonses, complaints, indictments and other legal documentation. Advise on law and evidence.
Brief Counsel in accordance with the Legal Services’ procedures and, when necessary, attend conference with Counsel.
Monitor changes in legislation and case law affecting the range of matters dealt with in the team and update other team members and clients.
Provide expert advice to Council Officers and Members as required, particularly on matters relating to anti- social behaviour, housing, landlord and tenant, civil and criminal litigation.
Advise and assist all Directors and Assistant Directors on council policies and practices and in identifying any contraventions to ensure Council compliance with legislation.
Provision of advice to the Borough Solicitor in relation to his/her monitoring officer duties on the risk to the Council in respect of any legal implications arising from litigation and matters dealt with by the team.
Provision of expert written legal advice to Cabinet and or Council in reports and other key decision documents
Conduct and arrange training for officers in client departments and the litigation team.
Represent the Borough Solicitor at internal and external meetings.


Skills/Experience

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEX entitled to practice in England and Wales.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own work load and to work on own initiative as necessary
  • Experience of advocacy in the Magistrates’ and County Court
  • Broad knowledge of local government law or equivalent knowledge.
  • Knowledge and experience of civil and criminal litigation.
  • Experience of drafting legal documents, including pleadings
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex legal issues to Members and officers and to provide cogent legal advice accordingly.
